  : The photo advertised does not match the hotel, there was no lush green garden to be seen,. It was more like a self-service hostel, but it was comfortable, we only stayed for one night. The decor was dated, but a few places on the Isles were dated. it didn't impact our stay.

  : The Guest House is only a few minutes walk from shops and St. Magnus Cathedral and around 10 minutes will take you to the Harbour and seafront. The Travel Centre where the Tourist Information and the Bus Terminus is found is 5-6 minutes away (The West End is an old building - actually originally the Balfour Hospital back in 1908 - and relatively recently was the West End Hotel, so that it must be expected that there will be some architectural foibles to contend with). Breakfast was not large but sufficient with a choice of cooked options, cereals and toast.
  : There are no permanent staff in the Guest House. The breakfast lady, housekeeping and anyone in the little office have all disappeared by mid-morning. The fact that my room (No.6, a little single) had quite a marked slope to the floor - in two directions - could unsettling for some perhaps, though I just found it amusingly quirky. (You definitely wouldn't roll out of bed as everything slopes to the corner!). The room was extremely compact and like the whole building has a dated feeling about it - as I suppose you should expect of something 120+yrs old? Tbh, overall I don't think it justifies its £125p.n. cost, but maybe Orkney and Kirkwall come at a premium to more accessible parts of the country.

  : The staff were very helpful, the included breakfast was excellent, and the room was very clean. The coffee service in the room was also great and they kindly provided plates and cutlery for dinner if you were doing takeout.
  : The beds and rooms could be updated a bit. This is a basic accommodation but it suited our needs.
