  : The property was clean and had a location close to the town/shops/restaurants. Rooms were big and reasonably comfortable. Bathroom was clean and the towels were changed when we requested.
  : For the price, I thought at least the breakfast should have been included. As it was the breakfast was another 17.50 per person on top of what we had already paid. We didn't bother but found an excellent cafe nearby which did an excellent breakfast much cheaper. The shared bathroom for 4 people was a bit of a pain. But at the time of booking this was all that was available on the website for 4 people. The rooms themselves, although clean and adequate, looked a bit dated.

  : The geographical situation is outstanding - opposite the harbour and just a 5-minute walk from major attractions such as the medieval St. Magnus-Cathedral, the ruins of the Earl's and Bishop's palace and the very picturesque old town with its numerous cafes. Beyond that, the bus station is also only minutes away and from there, travel all over the island - Stromness and the 'Ring of Brodgar' is easy and unexpensive.
  : 'The Shore' is a ghost hotel, a mere annex to 'The Kirkwall Hotel'. 'The Shore' is long past its heyday which must have been some time in the 60s and 70s, as indicated by the year dates of the wine bottles exhibited in the display cabinet at the entrance. The entire place is in dire need of a complete renovation and modernisation: the window of my tiny room was unclean, could not be opened and looked out at an interior court overgrown with moss/weeds, inhabited by pigeons, the shower delivered very hot and very cold water in intermittant intervals, but could never get the temperature just right and the furniture was battered. There was no wardrobe, so it was quite an adventure to move around there. At first, I was assigned a tiny dark room with an outlook at at fire staircase that would be suitable as a utility room, but completely inappropriate for anyone who has paid an amount well above GBP 100,- to stay in Kirkwall for an entire week. I was moved to another room that was slightly better (as described above) following my intervention, but my experience is still way below expectations. I was also informed that I had not booked breakfast, even though I firmly thought I had.
